© Le Fonds Belval

Whether it’s for a day trip, a weekend getaway, or a long-term stay, the Esch2022 region is a highly attractive travel destination. When planning excursions, however, similar questions usually arise for everyone. It goes from “What is the Esch2022 region?”, over “How can I access the European Capital of Culture?”, all the way to “Where can I find the various cultural programme offers and book tickets?”. We have summarised the most important questions about the European Capital of Culture project, the region, and your stay here and elaborated detailed answers for you.

General Questions

What is the Esch2022 region?
The European Capital of Culture Esch2022 consists of 11 Luxembourgish municipalities of the Pro-Sud Region and 8 French municipalities of the Communauté de Communes Pays Haut Val d’Alzette. Together, they are creating a varied cultural programme with more than 2,000 events in 2022, inviting you to experience and participate. Furthermore, the tourist activities that build on the region’s historical and natural characteristics will be highlighted this year. This offers the perfect opportunity to discover the diversity of the post-industrial region, which is not without reason entitled “Minett UNESCO Biosphere”.

Where is the best place to start my journey from?
In principle, any municipality is a good starting point for a journey through the Esch2022 region. However, Esch-Belval is an ideal starting point because from here the whole Esch2022 region is easily accessible by any means of transport. The distances to all the surrounding municipalities are very short and the local infrastructure offers plenty of different parking and accommodation options.

Accessibility Questions

How can I travel to the Esch2022 region or Esch Belval?
Public transport in the region is well developed and also completely free of charge on the Luxembourgish side. It is not a problem to take bicycles on the trains and buses. Have a look at mobiliteit.lu to find the best connections. If you are in Luxembourg-City, we recommend you to use the bus line 60 to Bettembourg, Esch-Alzette, Esch-Belval, and Differdange. Line 70 goes to Käerjeng and Petange. There are connections to the municipalities of Kayl, Rumelange, and Dudelange in the municipalities Bettembourg, Noertzange, and Esch-Alzette.
By car, there are numerous good connections, whether you access the region via the motorway or the country roads, all municipalities are connected. You are also welcome to make use of the car-sharing possibilities, which can easily be found at flex.lu. Likewise, we would like to encourage you to combine means of transport and take advantage of the local offer of active mobility: There are not only well-developed walking and cycling trails, but even free bike rentals available.

What is the best way to get from Luxembourg to France?
If you want to use public transport, we can recommend the numerous bus connections between Luxembourg and France. But the train line 60 also connects the town of Esch-Alzette with the French municipality of Audun-le-Tiche. Further information on public transport connections can be found on the websites mobiliteit.lu and fluo.eu. Of course, you can also travel to France in your own car and discover the municipalities of the CCPHVA, but we recommend that you make use of the car-sharing service available at most Luxembourgish railway stations. You can find detailed information on car-sharing in Luxembourg on the following website: flex.lu. Well-developed cross-border cycle paths are not very common. However, there are numerous hiking trails that connect the two countries.

Questions about the Local Infrastructure

Where can I find parking facilities for my car? Are there parking spaces to charge my electric car?
A good point of orientation when looking for a parking space is always the train station of the respective municipality. Generally, there are large car parking areas or even multi-storey car parks. Usually you will also find some inexpensive charging stations for electric cars at these locations. At chargy.lu it is possible to view a map of all the car parks in Luxembourg that offer a charging station for electric cars.

Do I need a ticket for public transport? How much does it cost?
Throughout Luxembourg, public transport is completely free of charge. Therefore, you don’t need a ticket for train or bus journeys and you can use all connections without any problems. In the French part of the Esch2022 territory, however, you have to buy a ticket online, at the train stations, or on the buses.

Where can I park my bike?
There are usually numerous bicycle parking facilities near the event venues or the train stations in the municipalities. In addition, there is a free local bicycle rental service with locations in most Esch2022 municipalities that also offers parking spaces for customers (velok.lu). The so-called mBox, which is also usually located at railway stations, offers further parking facilities for bikes.

What accommodation does the Esch2022 region offer? Where can I find them and what is the best way to book an overnight stay there?
The south of Luxembourg offers numerous overnight accommodation options in a wide variety of locations. A helpful website for finding and booking an accommodation is visitluxembourg.lu.

How can I find my way around the different municipalities?
In most cases, the different Luxembourgish municipalities have a pedestrian guidance system that makes it easy to find your way around. All the information relevant to the visitor (cultural centre, shopping opportunities, tourist facilities, etc.) is usually displayed.
