Organs, electric guitars, classical orchestras and loop stations – the musical diversity in September and October

Within the framework of the Découvertes et créations autour de l’orgue, the “king of all instruments” will once again be in the spotlight of Esch2022. This exceptional project aims to familiarise the interested public with the organ and its rich musical repertoire in all its sizes and variations.

In this context, 25 candidates submitted their unique organ creations inspired by specific elements of the Esch2022 region to an international jury between July 2021 and March 2022. During the final concert in the church of Dudelange on 25 October, the winners’ compositions will be performed for the first time by Vincent Warnier and Cindy Castillo, together with Arthur Stammet and Laurent Willkomm. The audience is cordially invited to vote for their personal favourites among the awarded works. The work with the highest number of votes will then be awarded the Audience Prize. After the concert, the spectators will have the pleasure of attending the award ceremony in the presence of the prize-winners, the performers and the jury.

As part of the exhibitions at the Möllerei in Esch-Belval, Esch2022 is organising a series of electronic concerts in collaboration with the Rockhal. For the exhibition IN TRANSFER – A New Condition, from 3 September to 27 November, Carpenter Brut Leather will perform at the Rockhal Club on 29 October as part of their Leather Terror Tour (more information: DO YOU CLUB?). With hard-hitting riffs and metallic drums, Carpenter Brut demonstrates their love for 80s trash metal. The new show is both powerful and engaging. This combination creates a style of music that is more electrifying than ever.

In the context of the European Capital of Culture Esch2022, the Ensemble à plectre municipal d’Esch-sur-Alzette has founded the European mandolin and guitar orchestra – Il Forum musicale, representing an absolutely unique project in Europe. It is an orchestra composed of about 40 European instrumentalists, led by the renowned Spanish conductor Pedro Chamorro. Its aim is to offer professional musicians and students, pupils and amateurs from various music schools and conservatories from all over Europe – especially from the field of mandolin and guitar ensembles – a unique experience and to support the training of future professional artists.

“Il Forum Musicale” aims to showcase the diversity of plucked instruments in Europe and, at the same time, create a space for cultural exchange and cooperation that will strengthen the ties between the different European countries and their regions, even well beyond 2022.

Throughout the past year, the musicians of the European Mandolin and Guitar Orchestra have been exchanging ideas and composing music together in three different phases. The result will be presented to the general public in the form of the concert Capriccio italiano on 30 October.

In order to create completely unique and unprecedented sound creations that also reflect the spirit of the southern region, musician Samuel Reinard aka Ryvage uses the technique of “field-recording” to capture the nocturnal sounds of the steel industry at the still active sites of Belval and Schifflange. These extraordinary sound creations are combined with compositions by various electro musicians and form the basis of the fascinating sound installation NIGHTSONGS.

During a nocturnal sound walk through the Belval district, participants will have the opportunity to discover these compositions at 13 different stations. All you have to do is download the geolocalised GOH app onto your smartphone and the acoustic journey through the industrial heritage of the southern region can begin.

In September and October, a special focus will be on the four-part exhibition Live, Breathe and Sleep Guitars – collection Luc Henzig, which presents the history of the electric guitar – from the origins of amplification of the instrument and its technical development all the way to the standardisation and commercial success of the most famous guitar models in the world as well as their Guitar Heroes.

The exhibition is accompanied by an exceptional supporting programme that includes exciting conferences, concerts and workshops on all aspects of the guitar and rock music.
