REMIX Festival

Le projet Future Frequencies, lancé par Esch2022 et encadré par Matthieu Herbert et Frank Widemann a permis à une douzaine de musiciens amateurs, tous styles de musiques confondus, de créer ensemble le concert « The Sound of Europe ». Au fil de différents workshops, les musiciens du territoire Esch2022 sélectionnés, ont créé un son et lumière inédit de 45 minutes qu’ils présentent sur la grande scène de la Rockhal. Ils seront accompagnés par une centaine de musiciens issus de la Brass Band du Conservatoire de Musique de la Ville d’Esch-sur-Alzette, de l’Ensemble à Plectre Municipal d’Esch-sur-Alzette, et d’une chorale pop dirigée par Priscilla da Costa

Dans le cadre d’Esch2022 et en collaboration avec la Luxembourg Space Agency (LSA), nous invitons enseignants et élèves (du cycle fondamental 2 à 4 au Luxembourg et du CP au CM2 en France) à participer à un concours de dessin. Lancez-vous dans cette mission de recherche top secrète, qui propose de redessiner le futur de la région, de l’Europe et même au-delà. Le Programme de Recherche Spatiale est un exercice créatif qui éveillera l’imagination des élèves. Les idées les plus extraordinaires seront intégrées aux évènements de l’ouverture d’Esch2022.

Did you know that the church in Saint-Martin in Dudelange is home to a world-famous great organ? The best-known organists in the world are practically queueing up to play on it. So for the opening of the REMIX Festival we will meet in this unique heritage site and savour an immersive artistic experience like no other. On this occasion, music will be mixed with a contemporary dance performance and the projection of archival films about the steel industry. This performance will also make use of samples of sound effects that have been recorded and managed by means of software using mathematical algorithms in order to create an unheard mix of musical composition and a multidisciplinary show that pushes the artistic boundaries. This explosive and colourful REMIX will appeal to all your senses and give you a taste of what will be on offer in 2022.

How about attending an open rehearsal of Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s famous play “Der Besuch der alten Dame” (“The Visit”), which first premiered in 1955? This promises to be a fascinating REMIX, directed by Claire Thill with the citizens of Biergerbühn. This fantastic participatory stage project, led by the independent Little Lies Collective, will open on 8 October 2021 at the Escher Theater. “Mixing existing text, documentary theatre and interdisciplinary cultural performance methods, we will be re-writing the play, highlighting the societal controversy surrounding the history of the Minett region. In the course of this process, citizens will be able to reclaim ownership of this play once more. This will be the first phase of a second joint creation, “Doheem”, in which you are warmly invited to participate, and which will be shown in 2022. Is it possible to define a new European identity through the lens of gender and inclusion? Listen to the live answer with artists and project partners who will be revealing some of their projects to us by way of a preview. If Esch2022 country were to be a woman, what would she look like? Would she be independent, strong, assertive? Who were the visitors to Hélène Bucholtz’s salon, the composer whose music will be played in 2022? How to stage a multilingual play based on women’s stories on abortion throughout Europe? (“Actual Goddamned Agency” project, with the Escher Theater, the Kaunas Chamber Theatre and the Family Planning Agency). What will be the end product of the collaborative writing of The March of Those Whom History Forgot, involving seven women writers and seven women composers?

How to turn the spotlights onto globalisation? Project partners tell us more about the impact of the industrial past on the Minett region and the transformation of societies and cities all over the world. What were the consequences of the migration from the Minett region to Latin America, and in particular to the Brazilian town of Joao Monlevard, where streets bear the names of famous Luxemburg persons? What do we know – and not know – of this region? Could greater awareness of history contribute to the future of the Minett citizens? How can stereotyping the industrial mining past finally be laid to rest? Can today’s miner’s life be studied in close-up (“Den neie Mineur”)?

This is more to numbers than meets the eye! How about coming to a concert given by the Lucilin United Instruments that will be giving a 33 min overview of a contemporary music concert created for Esch2022 under the title of “33,7”. This mini-concert will offer an excerpt of contemporary music, a preview of a gigantic musical map, representing the diverse population in the South of Luxemburg and the neighbouring French towns. This diversity will then be transcribed into 2022 minutes (33,7 hours) of music commissioned or borrowed from composers of both sexes representing the nationalities that live on the Esch2022 territory. This ultimate fresco lasting 33,7 hours will be played unabridged in the Kulturfabrik in the autumn of 2022.

We shall be working on two French songs composed by Marita Blanchard, which come from “The March of Those Whom History Forgot”, a musical and theatrical piece that will be playing in May 2022. The “Pièces Montées” company works on projects that aim to take culture from its exclusive and institutional spaces and bring them into the open. “The March of Those Whom History Forgot” seeks to strengthen social dialogue and cohesion, to show the importance of mixed populations and to defend the values of European democracy. The audience is encouraged to share a memory that has been glossed over by the history books.

Can we imagine Europe’s future through intercultural creation and artistic means? Or could we forge new links together, whilst respecting the environment across the whole continent? Could dance, or architecture, bring citizens together, transcend the different languages and create new communication tools? How could architecture change the way in which we move around and meet up in cities? Is dance a universal language? Can industrial landscapes influence our way of life or the relations between inhabitants? If Esch2022 country were to be an artistic event, how would it express itself?

Here you will be able to meet a group of scientists-programmers from the University of Luxemburg. They will show, by way of a preview, several innovating tools and software programmes that are used to create the ”AI & ART Pavilion” of Esch2022. A final Q&A session will conclude the conference. The “AI & ART Pavilion”, which is located on the Belval Campus, will be a permanent centre for digital culture and will be open to the public throughout 2022. It will be a place for learning about digital culture and the project comprises three parts: a space for realising artistic projects on the theme of technological specificity and the interaction between physical and digital existence; an experimental space and a space for conferences and special events.

Join the artists from Man’ok & Cie and the Merci Raymond Collective for an introductory session to corporal expression and a reconnection with nature, mixing dance, music and sound. Become aware of your body, rediscover your deep energy through breathing exercises and corporal and vocal games. This workshop leads to the “Eden Europa” project, developed by Man’Ok & Cie and Merci Raymond on the Micheville site in Audun-le-Tiche and several French and Luxemburg towns. Together, the two collectives will be developing a choreographical and musical trip through some of the most remarkable locations, including gardens and micro-farms created by the inhabitants.

Panel Discussions - Discover the many different facets of local history through the problems that exist in collective memories. How does that memory influence our present and our future? If the Esch2022 territory were to be a monument, what would it look like? Several artists and project partners set out their points of view. The “E roude Fuedem duerch de roude Buedem” seeks to reveal old histories and legends in several towns which share one particular feature: their red soil. Project “33,7” will create a huge musical map of the mixed population living in the South of Luxemburg. And the project entitled “Our archives – your story” will transmit the memories of that site to the future residents of the NeiSchmelz quarter.

Panel Discussions - What part can modern technology play in art without compromising its human dimension? By examining some of the projects relating to interactions between art and technology, we should be able to see how our perception of reality changes in the digital world when compared to the real world. How can the new digital media change your artistic expression? Does the digital world stimulate interdisciplinarity and the invention of a new identity? Does Art need a “human touch”? Could we all paint a Van Gogh painting, or would something still be lacking? Would that be important? If the Esch2022 territory were to be a robot or an algorithm, what would it look like?
