The European Capital of Culture region, Esch2022, including southern Luxembourg and neighbouring France, celebrated the end of the title year. 2000 visitors celebrated the closing evening of Esch2022 – REWIND-PLAY-FORWARD on 22.12.22, with more than 100 artists.

Rewind Esch2022

In the first part, Rewind Esch2022, twelve dialogue sessions, accompanied by images, videos and performances, provided an opportunity to look back on the year and discuss the legacy of the cultural capital project. The mayors and other representatives of the 19 Esch2022 municipalities, together with local partners and numerous guests at the Rockhal, presented the cultural and tourist highlights as well as their inter-municipal, cross-border and international cooperation – for example with Kaunas 2022 and Novi Sad 2022.

(Re)Play Esch2022

The second part of the event, (Re)Play Esch2022, enthused the participants with concerts, performances and dance. BELONG with AlterCaDance, Capoeira Team Luxembourg and Kinima asbl took over the Main stage and offered an exclusively inclusive journey with world music, flamenco, capoeira and African dance. In the Club, the Belgian trans-noise duo La Jungle, accompanied by young people from the Institut Médico Educatif d’Aumetz presented new punk songs they composed together during several residency workshops in L’Arche (F-Villerupt). On the Floor, literature met music with two Esch2022-projects: L’Apéro littéraire and Désoeuvrés et é(s)chauffés.

The party continued at L’Arche in Villerupt (France) until 3am. Female DJs Miss Sappho and Bernadette electrified the crowds, while La Zintrie warmed up the bar area. Special mention to the music and dance collective LA CREOLE, who brought some serious hot moves.

A special thanks

In a video shown at the beginning of the closing ceremony, H.R.H. the Great Duchess warmly thanks the organisers, artists and visitors who made “REMIX” a reality: the leitmotif evoking the renewal of the region through new influences in science, technology, art and culture.
