First residency of the French company KompleX KapharnaüM

For 20 years, the French company KompleX KapharnaüM has been staging encounters that blur the boundaries between spectators and inhabitants, between the scenic space and the public sphere. Based on a sensitive reading of the city, between fiction and documentary, its narratives aim to repurpose public spaces and allow humans to repossess their rights. A multidisciplinary team of artists, KompleX KapharnaüM creates innovative ambulatory interventions adapted to the local context. The surveying and docking systems it creates within the city form the basis of itinerant creations and dedicated projects.

This fall, as part of Esch 2022, the company will start to scout places and collect material for several ‘metaphorical excavations’. These will take shape across several residencies based on the ‘activation of the local fabric’ and give rise to several one-time performances in anticipation of a grand performance in 2022.

‘FENÊTRE OUVERTE (Open Window) is a first step to getting to know Esch-sur-Alzette, its history and its inhabitants, as part of a remotely held residence. For five days, a dozen graphic designers, painters, videographers, sound designers and authors working as part of KompleX KapharnaüM will create, in our base camp in Villeurbanne, a visual fresco that offers a unique vision of the territory under investigation. A series of archival images will be remixed through different visual processes using different materials (paint, wax, plastic, etc.) to cover up, colour and transform the original photographs. These remixes will be created manually, in the manner of a sculptor giving shape to memory. Exploring the historical narrative is instrumental in trying to understand how history is written, what is kept and what is discarded. To help us in this ambitious endeavour, we will partly re-use our interviews with researchers from C2DH in order to create a sound universe accompanying the transformations.’

Participate online in the creative workshop FENÊTRE OUVERTE, as part of Esch2022, from Monday 30 November 2020 to Friday 4 December 2020, every evening from 7 to 8 pm on live.kxkm.net and onscreen at 120 rue de l’Alzette in Esch-sur-Alzette.
A mediator will be present on site from 6 to 8 pm to guide you and answer your questions.
