Egyptian Zār & Mawal workshops

From the heart of Egypt, BELONG brings few of the remaining artists on the planet who still master the Egyptian Zār music ritual, alongside those who perform the beautiful melodies of Mawal music, to Luxembourg for workshops and exchange with local artists. Zār is a community healing ritual of polyrhythmic drumming and dancing whose tradition is carried on mainly by women and whose main participants are women. This ritual has been widely misconceived as a form of exorcism. However, the goal is to engage participants with their inner selves and workout their tensions and frustrations by freeing their movement, state, and even their dreams. Mawal music is commonly used weddings and festivals in Egypt, and has developed throughout the centuries, gathering ancient Egyptian instruments, such as Arghoul, with modern western ones like Trumpet. In collaboration with "Makan", BELONG invites those Egyptian legends to exchange their art with local artists in workshops towards a concert in Escher theater (6 May).

About

Adham Al-Sayyad is a multidisciplinary Egyptian artist, researcher and project manager, who is active in the fields of ethnomusicology, engineering, pedagogical and social impact projects. Since 2010, he has been playing Kawala (Egyptian traditional flute) which he learned by following grand master Ahmed Al-Arnab in sufi festivals, where the instrument is mostly played, all around Egypt.

Since his arrival to Luxembourg in 2017, he launched ANASEA world-music project at the University of Luxembourg’s espace cultures with a mission to preserve and revive global cultural legacy among multicultural communities of the region, by organising masterclasses on worldwide folkloric arts, and arranging workshops whereby multicultural musicians teach each other the arts and music from their countries and cultures and work on mixing their styles towards a final performance.

Adham’s passion on joining 'dissimilar stuff' is not limited to creating multicultural synergies: his research is in the field of welding dissimilar materials. His trust in the potential of multicultural preservation and cross-cultural exchange in the sustainable development of communities and technologies led him to co-found the Intangible World Heritage Assocoation (IWHO) ASBL in Luxembourg in 2020, which he is currently chairing. IWHO aims at bridging indigenous knowledge with modernity's demands by removing barriers of exchange. Adham is currently finalising his PhD studies at the University of Luxembourg.
