Description
ECCE HOMO is a project centered around an installation of paintings and sculptures by Bruce Clarke. The exhibition, hosted at the National Museum of Resistance and Human Rights in Esch-sur-Alzette from September to December 2022, is part of a current of critical figuration. It is punctuated by the Butō dance performance THE WRECKAGE OF MY FLESH, by the Tebby Ramasike collective. The performance creates a physical dialogue with the plastic works.
The artists thematize the consequences of wars, crimes against humanity and genocide on people, invoking victims, suffering, deportation, and destruction. They create links with forced displacement, exile and migration. But they also approach their intrinsic corollary: strength, physical and mental resilience, human dignity.
Also part of the project are various interventions by Bruce Clarke and Tebby Ramasike on the French territory of Esch2022, such as the commemorative mural "Les Limbes de Thil", created by Bruce Clarke at the entrance of the Tiercelet mine in Thil (F) and numerous performances by Tebby Ramasike that will take place there in the coming months, and at the museum in Esch. At the same time, the artist and choreographer will extend part of the ECCE HOMO project to our partners at the Kaunas Ninth Fort Museum, a place where thousands of Jews and political prisoners were executed during the Nazi occupation, thus creating a link between Esch, Thil and Kaunas.
The project includes artistic workshops and a series of lectures, as well as an important pedagogical program with French and Luxembourgish schools.
Table-ronde: Le convoi 73: transport de Drancy à Kaunas
Le 15 mai 1944, le convoi 73 avec 878 déportés juifs, parmi lesquels se trouvent quelques Juifs du Luxembourg, quitte le camp de transit de Drancy pour le Fort IX à Kaunas en Lituanie, puis l’Estonie. C’est le seul transport de déportation de Drancy vers les Pays Baltes, pour des raisons encore inconnues aujourd'hui. Une table-ronde avec Christophe Kukawka (Association Convoi 73), Olivier Lalieu (Mémorial de la Shoah à Paris) et Elisabeth Hoffmann (Musée National de la Résistance et des Droits Humains).
Projection-débat: Rodina: l’épopée de jeunes filles soviétiques dans la résistance en Lorraine - Jean-Louis SONZOGNI
Elles s’appelaient Nadiejda, Alexandra ou Galya. Elles venaient de Biélorussie ou de Russie. Elles étaient résistantes et combattaient l’invasion nazie de leur pays... jusqu’à leur arrestation par les troupes allemandes. Après de terribles interrogatoires et un interminable voyage dans des wagons à bestiaux, elles arrivent à Thil, village lorrain d’apparence tranquille. Il abrite pourtant un camp de concentration et une mine de fer transformée en usine de missiles. Elles sont des centaines à y être réduites au travail forcé. Mais poussées par un incroyable instinct de survie, trente-sept d’entre elles s’en évadent. Elles formeront la seule unité combattante exclusivement féminine de la Résistance française: le détachement “Rodina”.

Les corps vont réagir et interagir avec l’œuvre de Bruce Clarke.
Die von Tebby Ramasike und seines Kollektivs präsentierte ausdrucksstarke und intensive Butō-Performance stellt einen Bezug zu den Reaktionen des menschlichen Körpers auf Leiden her, wie sie unter anderem in den Konzentrations- und Vernichtungslagern der Nationalsozialisten stattgefunden haben. Die Körper werden auf das Werk von Bruce Clarke reagieren und mit ihm in Interaktion treten.

Conférence: L’apathie de la communauté internationale face à des crimes contre l’humanité annoncés, par Patrick DE ST. EXUPÉRY
Dans sa conférence, le journaliste et auteur français Patrick de Saint-Exupéry analyse les positions de la communauté internationale face aux crimes de guerre, génocides et crime contre l'humanité.
Né en 1962, Patrick de Saint-Exupéry a reçu le prix Albert Londres et le prix Bayeux des correspondants de guerre. Longtemps grand reporter au Figaro, il a cofondé la revue XXI dont il a été le rédacteur en chef pendant dix ans. Auteur de "L’inavouable, la France au Rwanda" (Les Arènes, 2004), de "La traversée, une odyssée au cœur de l’Afrique" (Les Arènes, 2021), il a réalisé avec le dessinateur Hippolyte "La Fantaisie des dieux" (Les Arènes, 2014). Il dirige aujourd’hui la collection Les Arènes reporters.
Dans cette table-ronde, les participants traitent des questions relatives à la notion de mémoire après un génocide.
Quelle en est la conséquence pour la mémoire collective d'une société? ...dans les sociétés concernées directement? …dans les autres sociétés (en Afrique, en Europe, dans le monde)?
Est-ce qu’il y a une mémoire au niveau mondial de génocides ?
Avec la participation de l'artiste Bruce Clarke, la philosophe, journaliste et auteure française Florence Prudhomme, le député européen Charles Goerens et Frédérique Neau-Dufour, la cheffe de coordination de projets sur le territoire français d’Esch2022.

Bruce Clarke, born in 1959 in England, is a painter and photographer of South African origin who lives and works in Paris.
Clarke's grandparents, of Jewish origin, came from Kaunas and managed to emigrate to South Africa in the 1930s. No other family members were found alive in Lithuania after the Shoah.
Clarke integrates his political commitment and quest for human rights into his visual arts research. He has undertaken numerous projects related to memory in Rwanda and elsewhere. Clarke hopes that his art, which is part of a current of critical figuration, will stimulate reflection on the contemporary world and the representations we have of it.
Tebby W.T. Ramasike, born 1965 in South Africa, works as a Butō dancer, actor, choreographer and teacher. He lives near Arlon (B) and works on projects on an international level. In Esch-sur-Alzette, he regularly cooperates with the Musée National de la Résistance et des Droits Humains and the Kulturfabrik.

René Baptist Huysman is a sound artist and electronic music composer from Amsterdam.
Denis Sanglard, graduate in modern literature and theatre studies, is an actor and Butō dancer residing in France.
Ellen Knops is a lighting designer from the Netherlands.
Anne Oomen is a costume designer from the Netherlands.
