An Escape Room dedicated to sustainable development

Have you ever been in an escape room? The challenge consists of solving twenty riddles or puzzles, and to find a number of objects along a specific thematic trail. From June to September 2022, a sustainable Escape Room built from recycled clothes and objects, and revolving around sustainable development, will be integrated into the Massenoire space in Esch-Belval.

The Escape Room responds to Sustainable Development Goal no. 12 (SDG 12), as defined by the United Nations as part of the 2030 Agenda. Co-opted by the UN member states, its 17 objectives to save the world are showing the way forward in a bid towards a better and more sustainable future for all. They respond to the global challenges the world is facing today, from poverty and inequality to climate change and environmental degradation. The 12th goal concerns ‘Responsible Consumption and Production’, or to put it simply, ‘doing more and better with less’.

The Escape Room, which focuses on SDG 12, was developed by the Rotterdam School of Management at Erasmus University and Amaze Escape. It is a collaborative project between professors and students, that has already been installed on the Dutch campus. The students chose to work on Sustainable Development Goal 12, to raise awareness about the impact of our daily consumption: water pollution, the adverse effects of the cheap textile industry, the reduction of our plastic consumption, as well as the use of boxes and other packaging. Amaze Escape will develop a version specially adapted for Esch2022.

The aim of the game, which is devised for small groups of two to six players (ages 14 and up), is to solve all the riddles and challenges and, at the end of the game, to make actual choices to help create a better world for 2030. Each riddle will revolve around a topic relevant to SDG 12, backed up by real-life examples. At each stage of the game, participants will be able to receive further information on the various topics addressed and the consequences of their choices. In the final stage of the escape game, players will be able to verify their personal impact on the environment and to think about how to construct a better future in line with the 2030 Agenda.

The Escape Room SDG 12 – Responsible Production and Consumption will continue operating even after 2022, in accordance with the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Luxembourg, supported by the Ministry of the Environment. Travelling across the country, to high schools and other institutions, it looks set to continue its mission of raising public awareness around pressing environmental issues.
