Ah, Europe! It's simple: in France, we speak French; in Germany, German; in Italy, Italian; in Portugal, Portuguese; and in Luxembourg, Luxembourgish.. and all these languages too! For historical and geographical reasons, Luxembourg has become a linguistic jigsaw puzzle where these different languages are intermingled, spoken in different places, at different times and in different environments.
Europe is also crossed by opposing movements of affirmation of local identities and universalisation. Does the cohabitation of languages in Luxembourg fit in with that of Europe?
Transquinquennal, a collective formed on occasion of the European Capital of Culture, has brought together five actors who do not all speak the same language to explore the opportunities for misunderstanding, in the pleasure of misunderstanding. Will they succeed in living together? Because although linguistic diversity is synonymous with mutual enrichment, it is also a source of complication, especially if we get caught up in clichés - be they more or less funny - about the other's culture...

Ah, l’Europe ! C’est simple : en France, on parle le français ; en Allemagne, l’allemand ; en Italie, l’italien ; au Portugal, le portugais ; et au Luxembourg, le luxembourgeois… enfin pas que ! Collectif venu de la capitale belge, Transquinquennal a réuni cinq comédien·nes qui ne parlent pas tou·tes la même langue pour questionner le multilinguisme au Luxembourg. Le public devient l’auditeur d’un colloque plus ou moins officiel et joyeusement débridé, consacré à l’insécurité linguistique. Un spectacle à l’humour enjoué et décalé, mais aussi sérieux, de par les informations données qui remettent en perspective nos préjugés – et nos convictions même – sur le sujet.

Transquinquennal is a Brussels-based theatre collective currently composed of Bernard Breuse, Miguel Decleire, Stéphane Olivier and Brigitte Neervoort. Transquinquennal was founded in 1989 out of a need to do theatre differently and to provide a space that escapes conformity. Since then, it has been experimenting intensively with contemporary creation. Scoffing at linguistic and territorial borders, they choose to believe that there are only solutions and not problems when it comes to honouring the living and allowing encounters.
