ENG Born 1981, Franck Miltgen lives and works in Luxembourg. He received his MA from the Université de Provence Aix Marseille with Prof. Fabien Faure and Universität der Künste Berlin (UdK) with Prof. Henning Kürschner. Franck Miltgen works from multiple mediums, where he lets concrete abstract images appear, often large formats that unfold in space. In the field of expanded painting, technic and production process are specifically reimagined for every work. The scenic motif with themes like public space and the forces of nature are constantly engaging the artist. Tensions always pervaded art, I believe. In my work this translates with materials that have warm or cold properties, surfaces with absorbent or reflective qualities and with a coalition of pure and ornamental forms. The use of the hand is associated to industrial and technological means. It is important that the relation between these resources is determined by the context the work inserts itself in. The result of this contextualized process, is an artifact that has a certain grounding in reality. The object in question, that aims to be like a deployment of painting in a given environment, formulates a situation in space that conveys the idea of a wall. As a multiple carrier of memory, like an accumulating trap, a wall grounds us to earth and into time. It conditions the relation of our body to space, and it articulates what we consider being part of the private or of the public sphere. Nevertheless, the wall does not intervene as a support nor to delimitate space, but as an image to be discovered in the physical world, then to be transposed into representation. This wall I will seek to register it, by taking its imprint, by peeling its skin off, or by copying its surface. This process is always kept by simple means, so to expose the essential while contenting with its envelope. If in this way the accent is put on the appearance of this envelope, it is because the device aims at installing a certain resistance, to the abuse of representation and narrative, as an accumulation of the real.Description
'Weiss Kaul' is a double project, a monumental concrete sculpture and a mobile pavilion that follows with it. These two facets of the same project attempt to highlight the geological responsibility of humanity linked to the industrial exploitation of the earth, by putting geological time into perspective with human time. The Ottange quarry, which is located on the Franco-Luxembourg border, is known for the richness of its coral limestone fossils. Cimalux, which operates the quarry, transforms this 23-metre-high layer into cement on the Luxembourg side. This layer of coral limestone is reproduced on a 1:1 scale using 3D scanning, thus forming a concrete sculpture reproducing the relief of the coral cliff in layers and reflecting the monumentality of geological time.
In a second phase, the form of this sculpture will be reused. By spacing out the form plates, a mobile and modular pavilion will be created in various places belonging to the region's industrial past. This pavilion will be used to display marine fossils found in the vicinity of the various locations that the pavilion will occupy during the cultural year. The MNHN will display a selection of high-quality fossils in these pavilions, always taking into account the proximity of the pavilion to the place of their discovery.

Inauguration de la sculpture "Wäiss Kaul, A Local Coral Reef". A 1km vol d'oiseau de la où se trouve la sculpture, se situe la site de la "Wäiss Kaul", où un banc corallien fossilisé a été scanné pour être reproduit à l'échelle idendique, donnant cette sculpture monumentale en béton, de 10 mêtresx2m50 de haut. Le coffrage de la sculpture sera réutilisé tout au long de l'année culturelle pour former un pavillon scénographique mobile, qui montrera les plus beaux spécimens de fossiles marins trouvés à proximité de l'implanatation du pavillon et issus des collections du Musée national d'histoire naturelle.

Born 1981, Franck Miltgen lives and works in Luxembourg. He received his MA from the Université de Provence Aix Marseille and received a grant for the Erasmus exchange programme at Universität der Künste Berlin (UdK) in Prof. Henning Kürschner's class. He is convinced that art is limitless. To exist and to be seen, a work of art is tied to the viewer and its context. The discovery of the object becomes a constitutional part of the creation process. Notions like absorption and radiation are part of a larger tension field through which Franck Miltgen’s work engages with the question of dual nature of objecthood, between the physical and virtual state. From there his work is rooted in 60s and 70s minimal and process art, and shares a common interest for the archaic form and immemorial time. To do so, he creates images that negotiate their appearance through direct contact with space. Appropriation processes, like recording, copying and broadcasting, translate a liminal position that is considering the in-between by manifesting its physical presence. Inserting the work into 'reality', particularly according to place and time, has always been a prime concern for the artist, which he is perpetuating trough his engagement with art in public space.
