Description
Radio Art Zone is a 100-day radio art station for the European Capital of Culture Esch2022, which will be broadcast in the south of Luxembourg on 87.8 FM by Radio ARA. The schedule consists of two daily programmes. Firstly, newly-commissioned 22-hour radio productions created by more than 100 international and local artists. Secondly, two-hour live broadcasts from a kitchen space, which can move location as desired. This show will be open in format, to allow for natural discussions to evolve between artists visiting Esch2022 and members of the public - the ice being broken by cooking together. The 22-hour shows will be mainly pre-produced, but some will occur live at various locations in the Esch2022 catchment area. Additionally there will be two month-long artist residencies which will include public workshops, two youth productions and two local productions performed in public space, which will open up participatory opportunities for locals and visitors to Esch2022. An online audio archive and a subsequent print publication by Radio Art Zone will ensure the long-term resonance of this unique project. It will be possible to receive the transmission via radio in most of the areas covered by Esch2022, and the programme will also be live-streamed for the worldwide audience.
Radio Art Zone launches as a permanent online exhibition
Two thousand two hundred hours of original radio art, which were broadcast on Radio Art Zone
over the summer, are now available to experience anew and rediscover in their original durational
form.
Each of the one hundred 22-hour-long productions by international artists and groups that were
commissioned for Radio Art Zone as part of the European Capital of Culture Esch2022 are now
located on the individual artist pages of the radioart.zone website. After attracting more than
250,000 listeners during the live broadcast period, the website now offers this unique collection of
contemporary radio art for radio fans, experimental sound enthusiasts and academic researchers
alike.
In its archival incarnation Radio Art Zone preserves not only the visionary works of 200
international radio artists, but also the idea that groundbreaking programming can enable an entire
radio station to be considered a work of art in itself.
Radio Art Zone is the world's largest celebration of radio art. Two hundred international and local artists produce 100 days of unique radio for listeners on 87.8 FM in Esch-sur-Alzette and worldwide on www.radioart.zone. Special live radio events can be witnessed on site throughout the summer. Every day a lunchtime show will be broadcast from a local kitchen. For a detailed schedule go to www.radioart.zone

Radio Art Zone: Sounding Esch by Udo Noll - featuring a live performance
The city’s soundscape is captured from various locations. Typical sounds, iconic signals and the unheard and hidden are transformed into a live machine and human radio performance, which slowly moves between and merges the selected locations according to the city’s topography and activity or the artist's intervention. The sounds are captured live on location by a number of mobile microphone units. Will you somehow magically appear on air?
